Farewell to Friendship – Neil Churches

Another brilliant piece from a GUNNAS WRITING MASTERCLASS writer

They had been friends on opposite sides of the negotiating table for eighteen months. They confounded their common enemies on many occasions. Now it was time for one to leave without the other’s knowledge.
One was a prisoner, the other a guard.
The prisoner had planned his escape in detail and was ready to leave in four weeks. He did not wish his friend to suffer the consequences of his escape.
They sat in the guard’s office sharing smokes. The prisoner moved the conversation to the guard’s career prospects, he was stuck in a rut, he should move on. The guard replied that this was a very safe place, considering there was a vicious war outside the prison.
The prisoner pointed out things change unexpectedly in times of war. Where once there was safety, might now be peril. It would be prudent to seek other points of safety. Another pair of cigarettes were smoked in consideration of where would safe.
How quickly should he seek these points of safety asked the guard. Urgently replied the prisoner.
Rising, shaking hands, they left the room.
Ten days later they shook again in farewell, as the guard left for a new posting.
The prisoner escaped to timetable, remaining safe and free.
