Listening – Kathleen Pleasants

Another brilliant piece from a GUNNAS WRITING MASTERCLASS WRITER.

I hear the growl of the engine from a block away.
I flinch, alert. Tension building.
Do something. Anything. Look busy. Move.
Is the house tidy?  What are the children doing? Has anyone done anything I might be responsible for? What should I be doing?
Wait, out of sight until you hear the voice.
Always listening. Assessing. Judging the nuance, the tone, vibrations in the air. Read the mood. Tread lightly.
Is it safe tonight? I am twelve.
